What is coolest hydraulic machine you have ever seen?
Mine is the Peterborough Liftlock. A hydraulic teeter-totter of grand proportions.
Here my students are taking the "wrench twister" tour.


Rod diameter: 7.5 feet
Barrel length: 75 feet
Age: 105 years
Medium: Water
Packing: Translock 29 (pictured in leaking mode)
Load: 3.2 million pounds
Number of times either rod has ever been removed from their barrel for servicing in 105 years: 0

So much for never betting your life on an o-ring - the cargo is passenger boats...

That is pretty cool. How are they developing the 500 psi of water? How often do they change the packing? What's the lift time on that?
I havn't worked out anything of that scale. The largest cylinder I have worked on would probably be a chip dump cylinder, which lifts chip trucks up in the air to unload, similar to this one pictured.

wow... that chip truck dumper is pretty cool....youd think there'd be a simpler way, but then it actually is pretty simple to just take the truck and tip it....

the 500 psi is generated by taking on 1 foot more water in the upper tub. The upper river is 8 feet deep, the lower river is 7 feet deep.
The extra foot of water weighs 144 tons. Mother nature provides the power.

They change the packing 1 or 2 times per season.

actual time in flight is about 2.5 minutes.
